Dr. Smith was born
on December 4, 1942,
and was saved September 1951. He began preaching on January 6, 1957.
He was a pastor for 34 years, including seventeen years at the Church of
the Open Door (independent Baptist) in Westminster, Maryland.
He led the Church of the Open Door to grow from fewer than 200 per Sunday
to an average exceeding 1,500 per Sunday and more than 3,000 members with
high days exceeding 2,000 several times a year. Hundreds were saved
and baptized each year.
Dr. Smith is
married to Betty Elaine (Womble) Smith.
They have two children, Davina and Marlon, and six grandchildren,
Jessica, Nicole, Susanna, Caroline, Jonathan and Daniel.
